87 Feared Dead As Mecca Crane Collapse

AT least 87 people have been reported dead after a crane collapsed on the Grand Mosque in the Muslim holy city of Mecca, the Saudi Arabian government has said.
Over 180 people were injured in the accident, the country’s civil defence authority said on Twitter.
Images from the scene showed part of a huge red crane crashed through the mosque’s roof.
The cause of the collapse was known at press time.
Mecca is currently preparing for the annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage and thousands of people are expected to arrive in the city from all over the world later this month.
Reports suggested the crane fell on the east side of the mosque, following high winds and rain.
The Arabian Peninsula has been has been hit by strong sand storms over the past week.
The mosque is Islam’s most sacred site and the destination for millions of Muslims undertaking the Hajj pilgrimage every year.
Saudi authorities began a major expansion of the site last year to increase the area of the mosque by 400,000 square metres (4.3 million square feet) to allow it to accommodate up to 2.2 million people at once.
Over three million people undertook the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in 2012 and Saudi authorities had taken steps in 2013 to limit the number of people involved.
Large numbers of people have resulted in several tragedies over the years, including a stampede in 2006 that killed nearly 350 people.
At the heart of the Grand Mosque is the Kaaba, a black cube-shaped building that Muslims all over the world face when they pray.
Islam requires that every Muslim capable of doing so perform a pilgrimage to the site at least once in their lifetime.
Once at the mosque, pilgrims perform tawaf- walking seven times around the Kaaba in a counter-clockwise direction.
The identities and nationalities of the victims have not been made public at press time, but many Nigerian Muslims are undertaking the hajj.
The Director of the media unit of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Alhaji Uba Mana, confirmed the casualties of 87 dead and 184 injured.
“We have, however, asked our medical personnel and officials in Makkah to go round the hospitals within the vicinity of the Grand Mosque to ascertain whether any Nigerian pilgrim is among the victims,” he said.
He added that the information received from Makkah indicated that there was a black man among the victims, but his identity was yet to be confirmed.

Steven Naismith Puts Chelsea Into Hiding

Steven Naismith scored a hat-trick as Chelsea’s struggles continued with a third loss in their opening five league games following a defeat at Everton.
Naismith came on for the injured Muhamed Besic early on and headed in Brendan Galloway’s cross before rifling in a shot to put the Toffees 2-0 up.
Chelsea responded when Nemanja Matic scored with a superb 30-yard effort.
However, the visitors struggled for chances and Naismith slotted in a late angled strike to complete his treble.
Chelsea’s tally of four points from a possible 15 means they have made their worst start to a top-flight season since 1986.
The Blues lost only three games on the way to the Premier League title last season – but after losing three already this campaign they could be 11 points behind Manchester City if their rivals beat Crystal Palace on Saturday.
“It is better not to look at the table,” said Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho. “For me it is the first time I look and see my team in that position. I don’t look at the table, I look to players, the training session we have and the matches.
“Our next match in the Premier League is against Arsenal and we are candidates to win.”

Your Negligence Caused The Fire Outbreak" Kate Hanshaw's Landlord

When there a fire broke out in the home of the beautiful Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw, many sympathized with the actress. However, the owner of the building has now blamed her for causing the fire.

Naij.com previously reported that that fire gutted Kate’s house located at Ojibo Adjaro Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, at about 3pm on Thursday, June 25, while the actress was away working on the set of ‘Do Good’.

The fire was caused by a power surge occasioned by the restoration of electricity by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

So bad was the fire that Henshaw was said to have lost some of her valuables and could salvage little of her property. Two days after the incident, Henshaw packed out her belongings from the house and she never looked back.

While many had believed that the property belonged to the actress, it has been discovered otherwise, as the house is said to belong to an 85-year-old pensioner who supports himself in old age with the rent from the house.

According to playgroundtv.net, a source close to the elderly landlord said: “You see, it was because of her negligence that the fire started in the first instance. She left her air conditioner on, when she knew she was going out of the house. So, when the power supply was restored in the vicinity, a power surge occurred in her apartment and the fire started. The problem now is that after she evacuated her belongings, she just gave the keys to the gate man and walked away.”

Kate is now said to have got a place somewhere in Oniru estate.

OBJ Almost Fainted The Day He Shook My Hand. Alamieyeseigha

Ten years after, the anger arising from the impeachment and subsequent imprisonment of former Bayelsa State Governor, Diepreye Solomon Peter Alamie-yeseigha by former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration is still reverberating even though Alamieyeseigha claims he has forgiven Obasanjo.

Obasanjo and Alamieyeseigha
Alamieyeseigha, who spoke to Saturday Vanguard in his country home in Yenagoa, said that he had forgiven all those who plotted and sent him to jail purely for political reasons even though the experience remains very painful to him.

The former governor was impeached and removed from office in December 2005 and was subsequently sent to jail for alleged mismanagement of Bayelsa State funds.

Some of his property alleged to have been secured with stolen funds in and outside Nigeria were confiscated and given to Bayelsa State by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) working in conjunction with foreign security agencies.

But Alamieyeseigha, who was granted state pardon by his former deputy governor and immediate past President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, last year, said that Obasanjo has not known peace because of the role he played in events leading to his impeachment, arrest and subsequent imprisonment.

He recalled that Obasanjo nearly fainted the first time he met him after his release from prison. He said the former president, who met him accidentally at the Katsina Airport became jittery on seeing him and managed to shake hands with him. Alamieyeseigha said: “I have forgiven all those who plotted against me, including former President Obasanjo. I know all those who plotted against me and sent me to jail. I cannot be living in the past as it does not help me in any way.

“What I passed through is painful all right but it would not have happened if it was not permitted by God. It is even more important to me that I am still alive today because I passed through many shadows of the valleys of death and still came out of them. ‘’I have met Obasanjo at very close quarters twice since I came out of prison.

I did not know that he was at the VIP Lounge at the Katsina Airport to attend the marriage of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s daughter. Obasanjo came face to face with me at the airport when I went to use one of the rest rooms. It happened that as I opened the door to ease myself, I saw Obasanjo sitting face to face with me and he almost passed out.

“But I held his hands. He was scared and he felt uneasy all through. Then he began to ask ‘DSP, DSP, DSP! What have I done to deserve shaking your hands?’ There were many people there, one of them was Kenny Martins, the then chairman of the Police Equipment Fund.

“I told Obasanjo ‘I was only shaking you for two reasons: one-because of the fear of the Almighty God, who created us and two, for the fact that I am the Ganuma Katsina and you are a visitor to my emirate and tradition demands that I should welcome visitors’. “That prompted Kenny to get up also and greet me, saying ‘great leader, great leader’ and he came and hugged me.’’

The former governor said his second post-prison encounter with Obasanjo took place aboard a Dubai-bound flight where the former president met him seated in the business class and addressed him as ‘Fayose’ out of fear . His words: “The second encounter with Obasanjo was when we met on a flight going to Dubai. When Obasanjo came, I was already seated in the Business Class and he had no choice but to greet me.

But because of possible fear of seeing me, Obasanjo called out ‘Fayose, Fayose, Fayose.’ I protested to him that I am not Fayose and I said: ‘Former President Olusegun Matthew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo, you are a devil incarnate.’ “I warned him not to talk again or he would face my anger. And I tell you, throughout the flight he could not say anything to me.

The only thing Obasanjo managed to say was to ask me whether I was the only one who had ever been sent to the prison. ‘DSP, is it only you that entered prison? Don’t you remember that I was also imprisoned? You entered prison and I also did.’’ In spite of his criticism of the former president, Alamieyeseigha, still has some kind words for Obasanjo.

Describing Obasanjo as a leader, who keeps his word and works hard, the former governor said he has a dossier on Obasanjo and would reveal it in his forthcoming memoirs to enable Nigerians know what the man had been doing since 1966.

“But one thing I know about Obasanjo is that he is a leader. If Obasanjo gives you his word, it remains his bond. You can call him any time of the night, and he will pick his phone directly.

He is ready to sit with you on how to solve a problem but he would not allow you to talk. That is the type of character he is. I have a dossier on Obasanjo and I will expose him and Nigerians will read it in my memoir,” Alamieyeseigha said.

Boko Haram Desperate, Recruiting Randomly

With the renewed efforts of Nigerian military forces currently fighting to restore law and order across the North-East, the Boko Haram sect is apparently gasping for breath and desperately recruiting anyone they can lay their hands on, especially at remote areas of Borno State. Daily Trust reports.

An encounter with fleeing villagers in Maiduguri by our correspondent revealed that on September 2, at night, gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram militants invaded a village in Magumeri Local Government Area of Borno State, recruiting youths to replenish their fast-diminishing ranks.

Baa Usman, 45, who arrived Maiduguri on September 3, told Daily Trust that when the gunmen stormed Ngubala village under Bamma district in Magumeri LGA, they besieged the area, going round houses, asking residents to come out and assemble in one place.

“When everybody was assembled in a particular location, the gunmen began selecting young, exuberant ones to sit aside for a preaching session, as they referred to it. They however allowed others, mostly women, children and those advanced in age, to go back home,” he said.
Usman added that the gunmen were seen in the village’s market on Sunday, the market day, though they did not harm anybody. They just went about calmly, buying foodstuff and some essentials, leaving immediately.

“The gunmen had been hitherto sighted moving around villages of Magumeri LGA, though they didn’t attack anyone. But they do sometimes seize cattle and food items and make away with them. They seem very calm when they’re going about their business, probably because soldiers are only present in Magumeri town, not in smaller, surrounding villages where the gunmen enjoy a sort of freedom,” Usman said.

Elsewhere in Mailari village of Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, another group of gunmen had on the same Wednesday attacked the village, killing five residents and leaving scores injured, a source disclosed. He said though the details remain sketchy, those who sustained injuries from the attack have been since brought to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and are being treated.

The source added that the gunmen had succeeded in taking away many persons that could not run for safety, saying the kidnapped persons would have been forcefully recruited as fighters against their fellow citizens, stressing that the Boko Haram sect has been now losing strength and forced into mass recruitment.

The source also said it is clear that the Boko Haram sect is no longer selective in its current ‘aggressive recruitment drive’, because the group is currently being dealt severe blows by Nigerian military forces. He added that in the past, when the terrorists invade a village, they would be selective in kidnapping their victims, as opposed to the recent approach of grabbing anyone in sight.

Another twist in the tale has the violent sect reacting to the multinational forces from Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroun blocking their supply of arms, food and fuel by resorting to using horses and donkeys for mobility in some parts of Borno State. Daily Trust gathered that there are very clear indications that the insurgents are running short vital supplies, including fuel for vehicles.

At Lassa, in the Southern part of Borno State, 93-year-old Ijefeda told said insurgents on horseback attacked his village, Yafa and abducted most of its inhabitants and those of nearby hamlets. “They came to Yafa on horseback and took girls, women and young men. We, the elderly ones, were about 20 and they basically ignored us as we battled with hunger and thirst for many, many days,” he said.

But, Ijefeda added, “One day we suddenly saw dust everywhere, accompanied by gunshots and in no time soldiers were all over the place. They rescued us and took us to Maiduguri and on the way I was discussing with other elders and for their villages, too, Boko Haram members rode horses to attack.”

Modu Bukar was a fisherman at Baga before he fled after an attack. He revealed that insurgents in the area have formed the habit of raiding village markets for food. “At first they were coming around to buy fuel in large quantity, but the supply of fuel became very low. But the notion that they do not have a lot of money now may be inaccurate. Just last week at Karna village, after Tungushe, when the vehicle carrying the Amir (Boko Haram commander) of the area accidentally ran over bread spread on a mat for sale, he came down and asked his boys to pick up all the bread, put in their vehicles and he brought out cash and paid.”

Bukar added that recently, in Karna, the insurgents stormed in on horseback, killed six people, looted shops and homes, snatched the car of the Chief Imam of the village and used it to cart away their booty. “There are several complaints by travellers, farmers and villagers being dispossessed of their horses,” he said.

However, there are no reports of horseback attacks close to the state capital, Maiduguri.

At Balle Mammani, about seven kilometers away from Giwa Barracks in the outskirts of Maiduguri where Boko Haram attacked and killed six people a few weeks ago, they carried out the attacks in vehicles and on foot.

Daily Trust also spoke to residents of Abadan, Guzamala and Kukawa, who said they were attacked recently by insurgents riding horses and donkeys, armed with sophisticated weapons. Because of that, it came as no surprise when some days ago, the Nigerian Army banned the use of horses and donkeys by the general public, particularly traditional rulers, in Borno State. The Army said the ban was necessary as members of terrorist group, Boko Haram, have turned to the animals as their means of transportation.

“Anyone found using a horse would be considered an insurgent,” spokesman of 7 Division of Nigerian Army, Col. Tukur Gusau, warned.
