BEER 101

BEER 101:
HOW TO POUR A BEER

Pouring beer is an art, and definitely part of the overall tasting experience. It is always suggest that you drink a beer out of a glass, and recommend that you read Glassware for Beer. It's a great primer to understating why, and a guide guide to pairing a beer to its appropriate glass.

The following demonstrates the most common pouring technique which can be applied to most beers and glassware types. You'll also find that most bartenders pour draught beer as follows too.

Steps to a Perfect Pint

1. Use a clean glass. A dirty glass, containing oils, dirt or residuals from a previous beer, may inhibit head creation and flavours.
2. Hold your glass at a 45° angle. Pour the beer, targeting the middle of the slope of the glass. Don't be afraid to pour hard or add some air between the bottle and glass.
3. At the half-way point bring the glass at a 90° angle and continue to pour in the middle of the glass. This will induce the perfect foam head. 4.And remember, having a head on a beer is a good thing. It releases the beer's aromatics and adds to the overall presentation. You may also want to gradually add distance between the bottle and glass as you pour, to also inspire a good head. An ideal head should be 1" to 1-1/2".

With bottled conditioned beers, that may have a considerable amount of yeast in the bottle, you may wish to watch closely as you pour ... if you don't like yeast in your poured beer. However, this is the highlight of some beers and actually wanted. Just note that the inclusion of yeast will alter the clearness and taste of your poured beer, and lively yeast is high in vitamins and nutrients!

"I AM RICHER THAN GATES" E. A ADEBAYO

Apparently referring to his spiritual endowment, the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has said that he is richer than one of the world’s richest men, Bill Gates.Teaching the worshippers in the mission during the church’s 63rd Annual Convention on Saturday shortly before the Holy Communion Service on the topic; “Overflowing Cup,” Pastor Adeboye said that if Bill Gates needs shoes, he would have to go to the market to buy them, but that if he should announce that he needs shoes at the Redemption Camp, where the convention took place, the auditorium might not contain the shoes people would donate to him.“I have houses in at least 188 countries of the world, where we have our churches, so I am richer than Bill Gates. Each time I visit these countries, my children would be struggling and saying ‘daddy, come and stay with me.’“ If I announce here that tomorrow morning, I need a car to travel to the new auditorium, how many cars do you think would be made available to me by you my children? Those of you that do not have a car of your own, very soon, God will give you your own cars. So, I am appealing to you to become an incurable soul winner before you leave this convention ground and your cup will overflow,” he said. The man of God had earlier used the occasion to warn that any of the mission’s provinces with the dirtiest hostels at the camp would not be allowed to attend next year’s convention, and advised that people should tidy up their dormitories.Meanwhile, a total of 104 children, comprising 49 boys and 55 girls, were delivered at the camp ground of the mission as at Saturday, 8th August. The Friday, August 7 Convention/Holy Ghost Service, which attracted millions of people from all over the country, and which caused heavy traffic gridlock along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, witnessed salvation, testimonies, prayers, songs and healing, where the lame walked and the sick got healed. There were also many powerful testimonies during the Friday Holy Ghost service, with a woman testifying of how she was healed of cancer, while another woman, who was barren for 20 years, said God eventually gave her a set of twins through the ministry of Pastor Adeboye.Another lady, who was possessed by a marine spirit, also gave a testimony of how God delivered her and she vomited two keys, which she showed to the congregation as proof. Also testifying, Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, said that he dropped out of school in 1979 and became a motor park tout, but that he is now a holder of a doctorate degree and a worker in RCCG.He said, “Pastor Enoch Adeboye prayed for me concerning my ambition to become governor and it came to pass after many years of my attempt to hold a public office”.In his sermon, Pastor Adeboye assured the congregation that God is sufficient in all ways, adding that God can reverse all the irreversible and solve all their problems if they obey Him.Welcoming the vice president, Professor Osinbajo to the convention on Saturday, Pastor Adeboye stated that he is not just a pastor in the mission, but that the VP is also one of the mission’s ushers, who minister during special occasions.“I don’t know why he was not allowed to officiate during the convention. I hope he would do so during the congress in December. I want you to send our regards to President Muhammadu Buhari and we want him to join us next time,” he added.Daddy Adeboye, as he is fondly called, used the opportunity to urge the worshippers to always pray for the Nigerian Army so that they could help defeat all the enemies of the country. It would be recalled that this year’s convention is tagged, ‘The All Sufficient God’ and ended with thanksgiving service on Sunday August 9 at the mission’s new camp ground situated in Shimawa Area.Dignitaries at this year’s event included, Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Benue State Governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom and his wife, Ondo State Governor, Mr. Segun Mimiko, Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi amongst others.

BUHARI TO PROBE ARMS PURCHASE UNDER JONATHAN

President Muhammadu Buhari will order an investigation into contracts involving the procurement of weapons for the military under the Goodluck Jonathan administration. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this while featuring on a Channels Television programme, Politics Today, on Sunday evening. Shehu spoke a few days after the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, said he led a military that was ill-equipped.A former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), had also said while some weapons and equipment procured by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan were used to fight insurgency during the latter days of his tenure, some others were still being awaited. The presidential spokesman said Buhari was interested in taking stock of every naira that left the national treasury and for what purpose. He said Nigerians were aware that books were already being checked and the exercise was not limited to the oil sector. He said, “The President is interested in every penny that leaves the Nigeria’s treasury.“As you are aware, records are being checked right now, not only in the oil sector, but also in the various departments of g overnment.“So, Mr. President is really interested in what has happened to the equipment that have supposedly been bought and supplied, some of which might be there on the ground or might not be.“Only a thorough audit will actually reveal this. The disclosure has been made about substandard (equipment) in the Nigeria’s fight against Boko Haram.”Shehu reiterated Buhari’s desire to urgently end the activities of the Boko Haram sect. While saying that normalcy is gradually being restored, the presidential spokesman noted that there is currently no territory in the control of Boko Haram.“The insurgents have been degraded. They are in disarray without a central command and coordination,” he declared.Shehu said the President would not send troops to the warfront without ensuring that they are properly equipped and taken care of.“Just on Friday, at the National Defence College, Mr. President was committing himself to the fact that our military will be well taken care of in terms of their welfare, in terms of their equipment and in terms of the motivation they need to confront these insurgents.“We are already beginning to see the fruits of this because as we speak right now, Boko Haram is in disarray.“And what we are witnessing now; that is, occasional bombings and suicide attacks, characterise only one thing globally. And that is that, the dying days of the insurgency. It’s just a matter of time, we’ll get there,” he said.

BUHARI TO HEAD MINISTRY OF PETROLEUM FOR 18 MONTHS

President Muhammadu Buhari is set to head the Ministry of Petroleum for 18 months before appointing a substantive minister for the ministry, The PUNCH has learnt. The President said this while meeting with some members of his political party, the All Progressives Congress, in Abuja recently. One of those at the meeting, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday, that the President said he would use the one and a half years of heading the sensitive ministry to reposition it.According to him, “At the meeting we had recently, we discussed the issues of portfolios and other matters,” the President said he was going to handle the Ministry of Petroleum himself for about 18 months.“He said it was after this that he would appoint a substantive minister for the ministry. He said he would only personally handle the reorganisation of the much-important ministry.“Besides, he said the ministry needed to be reformed and be rid of corruption. He promised to sanitise the ministry.”It was, however, gathered that the President was thinking of appointing an experienced person as his special adviser on petroleum.Buhari was once a minister in charge of the ministry and because of his experience, he was said to have vowed to make sure that he blocked all the loopholes that enabled those manning the ministry to either steal money or petroleum products.Speaking on the issue, the Peoples Democratic Party said it would be too early to speculate on whether the President would head the ministry or not.Rather, the opposition party urged Nigerians to wait till September when the President promised to name his cabinet. The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Ibrahim Jalo, told our correspondent that he was only sure that the President was going to split the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.Jalo said, “That Buhari is going to head the ministry is speculative. But what we know, going by his body language and actions so far, is that he is going to split the NNPC.“This is what we know. So, let’s wait and see what he’s going to do before we make comments.”However, the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties said the constitution vested powers on the President to head any ministry or parastatal of his choice or appoint a representative. The National Publicity Secretary of the organisation, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, said that Section 5 of the 1999 Constitution “vested executive powers on the President. He said, “He can decide to exercise such powers by himself or delegate it to his deputy, or public officers of the public service of the federation. That’s what the law says.“Whether he chooses to manage any ministry by himself is immaterial. Whether he decides to be in charge of ministries such as power, works, women affairs or culture does not mean anything to the Nigerian people.”
