Blatter Endorses Kalu for FIFA President

Suspended FIFA president Sepp Joseph Blatter has openly declared his support for former Abia state Governor Dr Orji Uzor Kalu to occupy the exalted position of FIFA President, even as he has faulted the candidature of former Secretary General Jerome Champagne and Prince Alli of Jordan.

Speaking in Zurich, Blatter said ” The position of the FIFA president is too important to be left to just anybody. I have heard of some candidates who want to take over from me. But I find the Businessman from Nigeria Kalu very qualified and interesting because he is not only a businessman, but a politician with lots of contacts and corporate experience. He can bring his great experiences to bear in the running of world football.

He is passionate about the game. I remember how he sponsored one of Nigerian clubs to win the CAF championship twice. He is a man that can take world football to the next level”, Blatter told the Swiss Radio monitored on Sunday.

Blatter said though Kalu had not formally declared his interest, it was in the best interest of Africa to nominate him because of his deep passion for the game. “If Africa hopes to win the support of other federations, then they must queue behind the Nigerian business man. Football has developed beyond just anybody taking over.

I sacked Jerome Champgne in 2010 so how can he come back to lead an Association he tried to destroy. You need a man who can command respect and win friends for football.

With Kalu Africa stands a better chance, he concluded. CAF is expected to meet next week to decide on a candidate for the election scheduled for next year. Orji Kalu and Segun Odegbami are the two candidates vying for the post from Africa,

Buhari is Shy Around Opposite Sex. Presidential Aide

Some insight has been provided into President Muhammadu Buhari’s aversion for women and the low number of female appointments since he assumed office, with his Senior Special Assistant, Political Matters, Mr. Gideon Samani, disclosing that the president did not include many women in his cabinet because he is “very shy dealing with the opposite sex”.

Samani, who spoke on Thursday in Abuja at the fifth annual lecture series organised by the Change We Need in Nigeria group, said Buhari was used to interacting with men, but added quickly that the issue of gender inequality would be addressed by the president.

His statement contrasted with that of a ministerial nominee from Kogi State, Mr. James Ocholi (SAN), who in defence of the low representation of women in the federal cabinet, told the Senate on Thursday that Buhari had brought women into prominence, including the late Prof. Dora Akunyili.

According to Samani, “If you are close to Mr. President, you will know that he has the interest of the nation as his uppermost priority.  He did not intentionally marginalise women.

“It is just that Mr. President is shy with women. He has been interacting mostly with men. I can assure you that in the shortest time, this issue of gender inequality will be dealt with.”

Samani, who was once a Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly and represented the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Babachir Lawal at the event, said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost the last election to the All Progressives Congress (APC) due to insecurity, economic challenges and corruption in high places, thereby forcing the people to seek for change.
“The change we seek is real and not mere rhetoric. People must feel it, touch it, and experience it across the different strata of our society – in schools, churches, market places and at all our duty posts.

“It is not going to be business as usual. Many guilty Nigerians, of their own accord, have fled the country. Our public institutions are now working.

“The availability of fuel and the generation and distribution of power have improved ever since. All hands must be on deck for all of us to be these agents of change,” he stated.

Speaking at the event, Senator Chris Anyanwu expressed disappointment with the appointments made so far by the president, stating that despite the fact that the number one citizen benefitted immensely from female voters, he has relegated them to the background.

She noted that so far, no woman from the South-east had been given a political appointment and that even the numbers of women in Buhari’s government is a far cry from what obtains worldwide.

“Mr. President has benefitted so much from us. We don’t expect him to draw us back. Women are able and strong to move this nation forward. Anything you do, you should know that the whole world is watching you.

“So far, women have been marginalised. No woman from the east has been given a political appointment and the ones he did were a far cry to what is obtainable anywhere in the world.

“We talk of change but we are afraid of the change. We have moved from the era where women clapped and danced for male politicians. President Buhari should be gender sensitive. He should open the door and let women rise up to their full potential,” she said.

The senator added that gender equality should begin with parents by treating their children equally.

Buhari Appoints New INEC Chiarman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu

THE National Council of States (NCS) rose from its first meeting under the administration of Muhammadu Buhari with the ratification of the recommendation of the President for the appointment of the immediate past Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC).
The Council also approved the recommendation to name the Ag. Chairman of the Commission, Amina Bala Zakari, a former Ag. Chairman of the Commission, Prince Solomon Adedeji Soyebi, Dr. Muhammad Mustapha Lekki and Dr. Taiye Okoosi-Simbile as National Commissioners.
Briefing State House correspondents after the meeting, which lasted for about one hour inside the Council Chambers, Sokoto State governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal along side his Abia State counterpart, Dr. Ifeanyi Ikpeazu, Tambuwal said the action of the President followed the massive retirements of most of the National Commissioners in place during the last dispensation.
Yakubu, a Professor of History served as the Assistant Secretary in charge of Finance and Administration in the just concluded National Conference. If their appointment is ratified by the Senate, Mrs. Zakari from Jigawa State and Soyebi from Ogun State would be serving their second term as National Commissioner of INEC. While Zakari’s term just ended, that of Soyebi, who handed over to the immediate past Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega as Ag. Chairman, following the sacking of Prof. Maurice Iwu in 2011, is staging his second come back.

"Ebola Scare Not Real" Federal Government

The Federal Government on Friday dispelled speculation of a suspected fresh case Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Calabar, Cross River, and urged Nigerians to observe good hygiene behaviour.

Mr Linus Awute, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, allayed the public fear of the rumour while briefing newsmen in Abuja.

Awute said the rumours have been making round since Wednesday Oct. 7, until government agencies concluded investigation of the case.

He said the ministry monitored the latest speculation and found out that it was a case of the death of a 21-year-old student of the University of Calabar.

He said the deceased patient was brought into the causality ward of University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) by the mother and other family members on Oct. 7.

Awute said the deceased was admitted at about one o’clock in the morning and was investigated clinically and tested in the laboratory to determine his ailment.

“He was admitted with bleeding, diarrhoea, vomiting, skin rashes and mouth lesions. His temperature on admission was 37 degrees centigrade and vital signs were stable.

“The parents said that the patient had never travelled out of Calabar, on the basis of signs and symptoms; a tentative diagnosis of viral Hemorrhagic fever to rule out Lassa fever was made.

“Some of his family members had a history of chicken pox a week to his falling ill,’’ the permanent secretary said.

Awute said that the deceased was treated with antipyretics and antibiotics during the course of his illness and he also received intravenous fluids.

“Sadly, at exactly 8.15 p.m., seven hours post-admission, the patient passed on,’’ Awute said.

According to him, 15 health workers and eight patients who had direct or indirect contact with the deceased patient were quarantined.

He added that other hospital workers were provided with thermometers to monitor their temperature twice daily.

The permanent secretary said that blood sample collected from the patient was taken to Irrua Lassa Fever Specialist Hospital for laboratory confirmation of the cause of the disease.

“Tests were run on the blood sample throughout the night and this morning the result confirmed that the deceased was negative for both Ebola and Lassa fever viral diseases.

“Additional tests using next generation sequencing methods are currently being carried out at the Redeemers University African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases, Ede, Osun state.

“This is to confirm which virus must have caused the infection and death and the result is expected on Monday Oct. 12, 2015,’’ he said.

Awute urged Nigerians to collaborate with the federal ministry of health and the entire healthcare teams to report any suspected case to avoid reintroduction of Ebola into the country.

He said this incidence has once again demonstrated that the fight against Ebola must be a perfect team work based on effective collaboration between government and other stakeholders.

LaCasara Reinstates 700 Retrenched Workers

The National Union of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employees, NUFBTE, on Friday confirmed that La Casera Company Plc has reinstated the 700 workers it sacked in September.
The head of Education Department of NUFBTE, Mike Olarenwaju, confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
Mr. Olarenwaju said the management of the company met with union members to resolve the dispute and that the workers had been asked to start work.
He said officials of the union would meet with the workers next week to finalise issues with the in-house union.
La Casera management had disengaged the workers over the alleged invasion of the premises by hoodlums.
At least 1,300 workers, consisting of 700 staff members and 600 casual workers, arrived at the office on September 14 to find information pasted on the gate that their jobs had been terminated.
It was not immediately clear whether the 600 casual workers were also recalled.
The union officials picketed the company for unlawful sack and denial of the workers’ right to be unionised.
The company had before the incident filed a motion at the National Industrial Council (NIC) where the union also took the case to.
After hearing the matter, the court granted the union its plea for an Order of Interim injunction restraining the management from terminating the appointments of the workers till the determination of the suit.

The court decision signed by the honourable judge, O.A. Obaseki- Osaghae, however directed that all parties to “maintain the peace and take no action that will lead to a breakdown of law and order”.
The case was adjourned to Oct. 19 for hearing of the two pending motions.

Sport Major: Vincent Enyeama Retires from Nigeria Football Team.

One of Nigeria’s best goalkeepers, Vincent Enyeama has said that he is no longer a player with Nigeria’s senior football team, Super Eagles. Enyeama who took to his Instagram page,  ‘vinny 2908’, said he has served Nigeria his best while in the pitch and now, has retired from active play with Eagles to focus on his club career.
“I have fought a good fight for more than 13 years. I have finished my course, I have kept the faith and sang the anthem with passion. henceforth, there is laid for me a crown which only GOD can reward me for my 13 years of national services. God bless NIgeria.
“Henceforth, I am no more the captain of the NIgerian senior football team, I am no more the goalie of the team. I am out of the team. I am no more available for international duties.
“I want to say thank you to every Nigerian fan and supporter world wide. It’s been the most trying period of my life but I know that Nigerians are there for me and God is with me. God bless NIgeria,” he said.
Recall that the former Eagles captain was recently stripped of that title by the Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh and handed over to CSKA Moscow forward Ahmed Musa, following an altercation between them.
Although Oliseh has said the rift between him and Enyeama has been sewn, he insisted that his decision of stripping the former Eagles captain of his title was based on discipline. ‘’I want a captain who is disciplined. A leader who can motivate other players. A player who  comes to camp early. I want a young player not a retiring player as captain. And Ahmed Musa is that player. He is my captain.’’
“The fact is that I would like to have somebody (as captain) who is thinking of playing now and not somebody who is preparing for retirement or thinking of life after-football. And I think it’s time we had peace and quiet around the Super Eagles. That is why I am glad that most of the players here are finding ways to work as a team because I get the feeling now that they are aware that they are representing 170 million people’’, Oliseh said on Brila.

FIFA: Hayatou Steps in as Temporal President

CAF President, Issa Hayatou
African football leader Issa Hayatou on Thursday took temporary charge of FIFA after Sepp Blatter was “relieved of his duties” because of his 90-day suspension, the world body said.

“Joseph S. Blatter was relieved of all his duties as FIFA president” after the move by the FIFA ethics committee to suspend him for 90 days because he is under criminal investigation by Swiss prosecutors, FIFA said.

Messi in Court for Tax Fraud

Argentina and Barcelona star Lionel Messi and his father Jorge are to stand trial on three counts of tax fraud that could carry prison sentences, a Spanish court confirmed on Thursday.
In a court filing, the judge in charge of the case rejected a request by the public prosecutor to try only the footballer’s father.
The pair were accused in 2013 of defrauding the taxman out of 4.16 million euros ($4.69 million) in taxes related to Messi’s image rights between 2007 and 2009 through the creation of fake companies in Belize and Uruguay.
No date has been set for the trial, which will take place in Vilanova i la Geltru, a town 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of Barcelona.
Prosecutors had asked for the case against the four-time World Player of the Year to be dropped as the alleged fraud was in their estimation carried out by his father, who has managed his son’s affairs since he was a child.
They asked for Jorge Messi to be handed an 18-month prison sentence and a fine of half the defrauded amount.
However, lawyers acting on behalf of the tax authorities pleaded for the player to also be tried and for both defendants to face a 22-month prison sentence.
In any case, both are unlikely to end up in jail as sentences of less than two years are normally suspended for first time offences in Spain.
“There are rational signs that the criminality was committed by both accused parties,” said the judge.
Messi, 28, is the fourth richest sportsman in the world, according to Forbes magazine which estimates he earns almost $65 million a year.
The news is just the latest blow for the Argentine, who will be out of action for six weeks due to knee ligament damage.

3 Boko Haram Memebers Die by Their Own Sword

Three militants of the Boko Haram group died on Tuesday when a bomb they were transporting exploded in Niger’s Far East region of Diffa, local sources said.

The bomb exploded when they were about to enter Bosso town, one of the sources told newsmen, adding that the militants were planning to carry out an attack.

On Sunday, 10 people, among them one soldier, five civilians and four suicide bombers, were killed in two separate suicide attacks by Boko Haram in Diffa.

The two bombs targeted a military camp and a Mosque in Diffa, a few days after two Nigerien soldiers were killed in an ambush by the militants in the same region.

In the last seven months, Niger, like other countries within the Lake Chad basin, came under Boko Haram attacks from its bases in Nigeria.

A multinational force including troops from Nigeria, Cameroun, Chad and Niger were fighting Boko Haram as Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari vowed to beat the group. (Xinhua/NAN)

Buhari Applauds British, Switzerland for Role in Recovery of Looted Fund

President Muhammadu Buhari has applauded the support from Britain and Switzerland for the recovery and repatriation of public funds stolen from Nigeria.

He disclosed that British, Swiss and other foreign anti-crime agencies had already given his administration much help with relevant information and intelligence on public funds that were stolen and illegally transferred to personal bank accounts by officials of past administrations.

He made the disclosure at separate audiences with the new British and Swiss Ambassadors, who were at the Presidential Villa to present their letters of credence.

President Buhari has in the meantime called for expediting the process of investigation, prosecution and repatriation of Nigerian funds stolen by corrupt public officials and their accomplices.

“Switzerland and Britain have been very helpful indeed in the recovery of our assets. But we must build on what we have started.

“It is also important to send a signal to the elite that it is no longer business as usual. I personally appreciate the efforts of Prime Minister David Cameron on this issue.

“He has honoured his commitments to us. He promised to support our government to build a strong and dynamic economy and he has been faithful to his word,”he told the new British High Commissioner, Mr. Paul Arkwright.

Arkwright, in his remarks assured President Buhari of Britain’s preparedness to give Nigeria the fullest possible support and assistance in the recovery of its looted resources.

“We are most ready to help. We have a good team at the National Crime Agency (NCA) working with your Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Tell us where and how we can help and we will provide the assistance.”

Welcoming the assurances from the new Swiss Ambassador, Mr. Eric Mayoraz, that his country will expedite action on the repatriation of millions of dollars stolen by Nigerian public officials and still held in Swiss Banks, Buhari said:

“I am very pleased and we will get our Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to work with you to ensure that all the stolen funds are returned safely to government coffers as quickly as possible.”

The Special Adviser ‎on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina‎, in a statement said President Buhari also received the letters of credence of the Ambassador of the State of Palestine, Mr. Saleh Fhied Saleh, the Ambassador of Myanmar, Mr. Tha Aung Nyun and the Ambassador of Slovakia, Mr. Peter Holasek.

The Candle on Our Watch. Author :Eke, Gabriel Ikechukwu

The candle on our watch

How long shall we stand and watch? How long shall we solemnly ignore? How long will it take us to realize? How long will the wind blow the light off our candle?
Yes! How long I ask? A nation blessed by strong heroes, who took it upon themselves and national responsibility to war for our independence. A nation God blessed with the likes of Macaulay, Zik of Africa, Obafemi Awolowo ,  Ahmadu Bello to mention but a few. Men of stride and national passion. How much proud have we made them? If life exists after death, will they be proud in the life after to say “we were pioneer citizens”, “we were the siege breakers”,” and we set the pace”. If our national heroes were to leave the land of the dead to visit us, will they be proud on how we have turned the system? How proud will they be to say “we were from here”? Will their face light with smile when they find out that the candle they left is burning out fast and dying on our watch.
I recall the days of coup d’état I still recall Zik saying “violence has never been an instrument used by us as founding fathers of the Nigerian republic, to solve political problems”. The days of civil war, the days of dictatorship, the days of civil unrest and moments of terrorism. How did we survive such horrifying times or have we not? How did we work together as one how did we control the burning bush, how did we find the road back to peace, how did we find the way to democracy again? Did we visit the underworld for counsel? What happened to the days when naira had value? What happened to fair trial? What happened to “Giant of Africa “? What happened to our thunder? Will our candle die off on our watch? Will our mission (Nigeria) be reached?
Two scores, one decade and five years it is, after certified years of emancipation, slavery and colonialism we have survived and swam dangerous waters of national challenge, tribal and religious misunderstanding, corruption, joblessness, poor economy, poor education and hospitals with doctors and facilities that need help more than the intended patients. While we die, the masked kings of the jungle swim in national treasury fatting up there generation and the fight against corruption turns to a fight against political enemies
Who...Who? Has let this misfortune catch on us like a wild wind? Who has let this great hurricane of terrorism jump on us like a leopard on a deer, who…Who? Who has left us vulnerable like a chick without a hen, and like the prodigal son, shame the father’s name.
We all have. Yes we all have! Let it not be said that the drummer did not drum, nor the ghost did not cry. Let it be shouted today from the mountain tops that we … yes we, you and I, has let the wind blow our candles to burn out on our very watch. Let it be heard that we are our struggle. Like Sampson and Delilah we are our bane. Shall we not change? Shall we all put our legs in water and palms in our last bowl of eba waiting for the presidency? Shall we play minute rules in corruption smiling and  saying” na turn by turn” shall we all stay in queue waiting for our turn to loot the future away. If we change our mindset, and behavior and our leaders turn a new leave, if we knew we are the leaders of ourselves, the candle will surely not burn out on our watch. Let shame be cast away and let’s guard our candle with all jealousy. Hold your candle and let it keep shining.
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE NIGERIA. GOD BLESS NIGERIA

Presidential Speech. NIGERIA @55

“October 1st is a day for joy and celebrations for us Nigerians, whatever the circumstances we find ourselves in because it is the day, 55 years ago; we liberated ourselves from the shackles of colonialism and began our long march to nationhood and to greatness.

“No temporary problems or passing challenges should stop us from honouring this day. Let us remind ourselves of the gifts God has given us. Our Creator has bequeathed to us Numbers – Nigeria is the ninth most populated country on the planet. We have in addition arable land; water; forests; oil and gas; coastline; and solid minerals

“We have all the attributes of a great nation. We are not there yet because the one commodity we have been unable to exploit to the fullest is unity of purpose. This would have enabled us to achieve not only more orderly political evolution and integration but also continuity and economic progress.

“Countries far less endowed have made greater economic progress by greater coherence and unity of purpose.
“Nonetheless, that we have remained together is an achievement we should all appreciate and try to consolidate. We have witnessed this year a change in our democratic development.

“The fact that an opposition party replaced an entrenched government in a free and fair election is indicative of the deeper roots of our democratic system. Whatever one’s views are, Nigerians must thank former President Jonathan for not digging-in in the face of defeat and thereby saving the country untold consequences.

“As I said in my inaugural speech, I bear no ill will against anyone on past events. Nobody should fear anything from me. We are not after anyone. People should only fear the consequences of their actions. I hereby invite everyone, whatever his or her political view to join me in working for the nation.

“My countrymen and women, every new government inherits problems. Ours was no different. But what Nigerians want are solutions, quick solutions not a recitation of problems inherited.

“Accordingly, after consultations with the Vice President, senior party leaders and other senior stakeholders, I quickly got down to work on the immediate, medium-term and long-term problems which we must solve if we are to maintain the confidence which Nigerians so generously bestowed on us in the March elections and since then.

“As you know, I toured the neighbouring countries, marshalled a coalition of armed forces of the five nations to confront and defeat Boko Haram. I met also the G-7 leaders and other friendly presidents in an effort to build an international coalition against Boko Haram.

“Our gallant armed forces under new leadership have taken the battle to the insurgents, and severely weakened their logistical and infrastructural capabilities. Boko Haram are being scattered and are on the run.

“That they are resorting to shameless attacks on soft targets such as I.D.P. camps is indicative of their cowardice and desperation. I have instructed security and local authorities to tighten vigilance in vulnerable places.

On power, government officials have held a series of long sessions over several weeks about the best way to improve the nation’s power supply in the safest and most cost-effective way.

“In the meantime, improvement in the power supply is moderately encouraging. By the same token, supply of petrol and kerosene to the public has improved throughout the country. All the early signs are that within months the whole country would begin to feel a change for the better.

“Preliminary steps have been taken to sanitize NNPC and improve its operations so that the inefficiency and corruption could be reduced to a minimum.

“Those of our refineries which can be serviced and brought back into partial production would be enabled to resume operations so that the whole sordid business of exporting crude and importing finished products in dubious transactions could be stopped.

“In addition to NNPC, I have ordered a complete audit of our other revenue generating agencies mainly CBN, FIRS, Customs, NCC, for better service delivery to the nation. Prudent house-keeping is needed now more than ever in view of the sharp decline in world market oil prices. It is a challenge we have to face squarely. But what counts is not so much what accrues but how we manage our resources.

“We have seen in the last few years how huge resources were mismanaged, squandered and wasted. The new APC government is embarking on a clean up, introducing prudence and probity in public financing.

“At an early stage, the federal government addressed the issue of salary arrears in many states, a situation capable of degenerating into social unrest. The APC government stepped in to provide short-term support to the debtor states and enabled them to pay off the backlog and restore the livelihood of millions of Nigerians.

“Fellow Nigerians, there have been a lot of anxiety and impatience over the apparent delay in announcement of ministers. There is no cause to be anxious. Our government set out to do things methodically and properly. We received the handing over notes from the outgoing government only four days before taking over. Consequently, the Joda Transition Committee submitted its Report on the reorganization of Federal Government structure after studying the hand over notes. It would have been haphazard to announce ministers when the government had not finalized the number of ministries to optimally carry the burden of governance.

“Anyway, the wait is over. The first set of names for ministerial nominees for confirmation has been sent to the senate. Subsequent lists will be forwarded in due course. Impatience is not a virtue. Order is more vital than speed. Careful and deliberate decisions after consultations get far better results. And better results for our country is what the APC government for CHANGE is all about.

“I would like to end my address this morning on our agenda for CHANGE. Change does not just happen. You and I and all of us must appreciate that we all have our part to play if we want to bring change about. We must change our lawless habits, our attitude to public office and public trust. We must change our unruly behaviour in schools, hospitals, market places, motor parks, on the roads, in homes and offices. To bring about change, we must change ourselves by being law-abiding citizens.

“Happy Independence Celebrations. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
